LEARNING TROUGH RECREATION
AND EXPERIENCE

SUMMER CAMP FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM, VRNJACKA BANJA 2005.

Same as during the previous camps, this one was planned to be realized trough two parts, completely independent from each other, not just by the choice of activities but even territorially. First part of the Camp was organized in SOSO “Milan Petrovic” in Temerinska 61 Street and is distinguished by learning trough experience. Three different workshops were organized during the day: cooking, creative workshop and workshop dedicated to communication process. Structure of the workshops assured interesting activities, lot of joy and fun.

Second part of the Camp was realized in Vrnjacka Banja July 15 th -25 th 2005. This was already third 10 days long organized Camp for children with autism, who were accompanied by therapists-eleven children were escorted by four therapists. All the programs accomplished during this 10 days long Camp have very positive effects on the level of self confidence and general psychological state of children. Activities were organized in nature and at the local swimming pool helped children to gain new experiences as well as new knowledge about the nature. Positive effects were especially visible in the domain of personal independence during daily hygienic routine and nutrition habits, behavior problems were lessened while general level of consciousness during daily routine were higher.
This style of work helps children in many aspects, not least by developing habit to spend more time without parents, as a first step toward the first phase of preparation for independent life in small households which are the goal to be reached in the future.

Rich cultural and social program which was offered to the summer visitors of Vrnjacka Banja, gave an opportunity to therapists to organize well planned daily activities in order to inspire communication and socialization abilities by children with autism.

SUMMER SCHOOL GOČ 2004.

Summer school is educative and recreation program situated in local community, designed for children and youth with autism, aged 4-18.
In the frame of this program we directed our activities toward acceptance of skills useful in local community, trough recreation, sensitive social and communication experiences. Our aim was to integrate children into the local community in order to help them to function in their surrounding as well as to improve their results during the education process. Summer program was organized at the mountain Goc, in resort owned by Red Cross from Aleksandrovac, July 15 th -25 th 2004. 10 children and 3 therapists were included in the program. During this program a research was implemented, whose results will be used for further improvement of program activities as well as scientific research papers. Video material that was made by therapists is recognized as worthy document. All the activities were funded by the Society for help of persons with autism from Novi Sad.

RECREATION SCHOOL GUČEVO

One of the main activities implemented in Therapy center for children with autism, which was the central point during the school year 2002-03, was recreation school at Gucevo. 12 children accompanied by three therapists (Misko Sekularac, Ana Krstic, Daniela Tamas) were included in the program.

Activities were planned in order to support physical development by children as well as to enable them to complete regular daily activities. In addition to the regular program children were taken to short trips to Koviljaca Spa, Tronosa Monastery and house of birth of famous Serbian language reformist Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic.
